The great thing about pompous comic and cartoon art collectors like me is that they can put you on to some really great stuff. The down side is they're really annoyingly opinionated and will sneer at you for liking Miffy (what am I saying? Sorry. Miffy is cool). So what I'll do is just mention some names... start from the beginning with some early cartoonists you can check out on google images.
George Herriman
He didn't just do Krazy Kat (one of the five best newspaper comic strips ever), check out Baron Bean, Stumble Inn and the Dingbat Family as well.
Windsor McKay
Drew the Little Nemo comic strip, also one of the five best newspaper strips ever, but is also famous for being one of the first great animators, with his short films Little Nemo, How a Mosquito Operates and his blockbuster, Gertie the Dinosaur.
Frank King
Did Gasoline Alley, which combines great comic art with a good dose of graphic design, a bit like an earlier, more cheerful version of Chris Ware.
Miguel Covarrubias
The greatest, most awesome caricaturist ever. Some might say it was Al Hirschfeld or Al Frueh but I will fight those people because Covarrubias is all over those dudes like a flannel.
OK, going now, but I will be back later so study up on the aforementioned legendary gentlemen, eh? There will be a test. If you fail you owe me money.
